RE:       Ebola Virus Disease Information

The 2014 Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting primarily the West African countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. A few aid workers from the United States have contracted the disease and returned to the U.S. for treatment. One individual from West Africa travelled to the U.S. and developed Ebola Virus Disease in Dallas, Texas.  Two health care workers involved in the care of the patient were diagnosed with Ebola Virus Disease.

We understand that parents and staff may have questions about Ebola Virus Disease.  Attached please find an Ebola Virus Disease reference guide.  It contains information about the risk to Monterey County residents and what the Monterey County Health Department is doing to prepare for the unlikely possibility of an Ebola Virus Disease patient in our communities.  The guide is also posted in English and Spanish on the Monterey County Health Department’s website (

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is creating and issuing a variety of guidance documents for clinics, public health, emergency medical services, hospitals and other sectors of our health system. The Monterey County Health Department is working closely with medical providers and first responders to ensure systems are in place to quickly identify, isolate, and safely treat a patient infected with Ebola. As the Ebola epidemic evolves and we learn more about how Ebola is spread, we will communicate with our partnering agencies and the general public as necessary.

Please contact the Monterey County Health Department’s Communicable Disease Unit at 831-755-4521 if you have any remaining questions or concerns about Ebola Virus Disease.
